Can The Study Of Urban History Help Us To Solve Relevant Issues Nowadays Cities Face? Four Cases From Different Continents
Abstract:Cities and regions face at present a number of relevant issues that are deeply rooted in each of them and are consistent with their traditions. They concern the quality of urban life, the preservation of local identity, the conservation of natural environment and cultural landscapes, the development of models of sustainable development. Different cultures approach these issues in different ways. It is worth to anatyze these different approaches through a number of cases. Some of them are in Italy and Europe, other in different regions of the world. Three are the key issues examined: continuity, memory and the invention of history. The cases of the Roman Theatre of Lucca. the Roman Circus of Florence and the Hospital of S.Maria della Scala in Siena, Italy; of Shajahanabad in India and Valparaiso in Chile are examined. This analysis points out that conservation is not an objective action. It is strongly culturally bounded. It is a project and a strategy, And it can and must use it to make better cities for the future.
