Abstract:Immunological memory is a hallmark of the adaptive immune response that is established after primary infection to prevent reinfection. Innate immune cells such as NK cells exhibit certain features of immunological memory after infection or cytokine induction. Compared with traditional NK cells, memory-like NK cells have the characteristics of mediating recall responses against previously encountered pathogens, enhanced cytotoxic functions and long-lived progeny. An in-depth understanding of the cells, molecules and microorganisms events that govern the generation of NK cell memory will provide novel strategies for improving vaccine efficacy and anti-tumor effects. This article reviews the phenotype, immunological memory characteristics and biological functions of memory-like NK cells and their application in clinical therapy.
