Mechanical properties of quenched and tempered 40CrNi2Mo steel at low temperatures
Abstract:Quasi-static tension,Charpy impact and SHPB(Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar) methods were employed to study the mechanical properties of 40CrNi2Mo steel which was quenched and tempered at 650 ℃ so that the effects of both low temperature and strain rate were understood. The results show that low temperature results in an increase in static tension strength of the steel but a decrease in ductility.Ductile to brittle transition occurs at-40~-51 ℃ indicated by impact test.At high stain rates(2 500~4 000 s-1) both the yield strength and the strain-hardening index are reduced as temperature decreases, whereas the compression ratio is increased with the strain rate increasing. The effect of adiabatic shear occurs during deformation of the steel at high strain rates, inducing a tendency of decrease in low-temperature strength and abrupt reduce in the impact toughness.
