Abstract:Energy transition is the inevitable path for China to address global climate change and achieve sustainable development goals in the new stage of development. As a new driving force for high-quality economic development in China, the digital economy offers new opportunities for achieving the dual carbon goals. To investigate the relationship between the digital economy, energy transition, and total-factor carbon productivity(TFCP),this paper empirically examines the impact of digital economy on total factor carbon productivity based on provincial panel data from 2011 to 2021 in China, and analyzes the mediating role of energy transition in the impact of digital economy on total factor carbon productivity. The study finds that the digital economy has a significant positive impact on TFCP,and this conclusion remains valid after a series of robustness checks. The influence of the digital economy on TFCP is more pronounced in terms of delivering significant "digital dividends" in regions with high levels of human capital, regions with advanced digital financial development. The digital economy influences TFCP by promoting a low-carbon energy transition.Furthermore, government environment govern plays a positive role in moderating the impact of the digital economy on TFCP.
