Abstract:Reducing energy consumption is of great significance for fulfilling China's 14th Five-Year Plan and international climate commitments. The development of new-quality productivity offers fresh perspectives for addressing energy issues.Utilizing data from 278 prefecture-level cities in China spanning from 2009 to 2022,this study empirically examines the impact of new-quality productivity development on energy consumption. The findings are as follows:① The development of new-quality productivity can inhibit energy consumption, and this inhibitory effect exhibits nonlinear characteristics, manifesting as a positive"U"-shaped relationship that first intensifies and then diminishes.② The impact of new-quality productivity on energy consumption is more pronounced in non-capital cities and non-resource-based cities.③ The upgrading of industrial structure and the level of human capital play intermediary roles in the influence of new-quality productivity on energy consumption.Research on the impact of new-quality productivity on energy consumption can provide a theoretical basis for China to develop new-quality productivity according to local conditions, thereby promoting high-quality economic development.
