Theimpact of emissions trade scheme on green development efficiency in Chinese cities:The mediating effect of green innovation

Abstract：The emissions trading scheme(ETS),as an important policy tool to achieve China's carbon neutrality goal,needs to be verified whether it promotes the green development of Chinese cities.This paper uses the difference in difference in difference(DDD)method to explore the impact of ETS on the green development of Chinese cities,and investigates the mediation effect of green innovation.The results showed that:① The ETS had significantly promoted the green development efficiency,which is robustness after the parallel trend test and placebo test.② The ETS induced cities'green innovation,that is,green innovation had a partial moderating effect when ETS influenced the green development of Chinese cities positively.③ From the perspective of the heterogeneity of pilot cities,the impacts of ETS on the green development of the pilot cities vary,which is related to the mediation effect of green innovation.The results suggested that designing the ETS needs to consider the development quo of various cities and stir the green innovation to accelerate green development.Moreover,more areas and their industries should be actively covered by the ETS policy.
