Abstract:The upward mining feasibility ( UMF) was analyzed for No. 5 coal seam in No. 2 north district of Donghuantuo Coal Mine. Factors of UMF in study area were analyzed, then the experiential methods of “three roof zone” and “mining affected coefficient” were applied for primary judgment. Numerical model of working face was built to predict the height of roof crack zone after the mining of No. 8 and No. 5 coal seam. According to experiential judgment, the No. 5 coal seam was above the caving zone of No. 8 coal seam, mining influence coefficient was larger than the experimental critical value 7. 5, so the upward mining of No. 5 coal seam was feasible. In numerical model, dilatation of surrounding rocks was simulated, inner zone in which volume strain contours densely distributed and volume strain ≥0. 025 was regarded as crack zone, so the height of No. 8 coal seam roof water flowing fracture zone would be 53m, when No. 5 coal seam was continually mined, the height could extend 0. 4m upward. Because mining of No. 8 coal seam softened surrounding rocks, the height of water-flowing roof crack zone of No. 5 coal seam would be obviously reduced, upward mining of No. 5 coal seam was feasible.
