Reducing CO Emissions from Explosion-proof Diesel Engines

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of installing a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC)on the performance and CO emissions of explosion-proof diesel engines. The method of comparing engine bench tests was conducted on DOC explosion-proof diesel engines to investigate their performance changes under different operating conditions. The results showed that the CO emissions at all 15 external characteristic operating points of the original machine exceeded 5 × 10-4.When the speed decreased, the CO emissions increased and reached a peak at 800 r/min,due to the decrease in turbocharger efficiency. After installing DOC,CO emissions were significantly reduced to within 1 × 10-4,with a conversion efficiency of over 84%and an average of 89.6%.At 800 r/min,it reached 98%and the lowest point was 84.2%.At the same time, the average exhaust back pressure increased by 8.6 kPa,which had little impact on power and economic performance. The exhaust temperature under external characteristic conditions exceeded 380 ℃,which was 220 ℃ higher than the lowest temperature of DOC oxidation reaction. Therefore, installing DOC explosion-proof diesel engines can effectively reduce the concentration of CO in coal mine tunnels and improve environmental safety while maintaining high safety.
