Abstract:To explore the changes in the wear amount between the brake drum and the brake pads, four types of brake drum specimens were selected to carry out two kinds of thermal fatigue cycle operations.Different surface treatment methods, the hardness of the non-smooth surface, the mass fraction of carbon(carbon content),and the type of graphite were screened as design variables, and a wear test was conducted on a wear tester by rubbing against semi-metallic brake pads. The results show that an increase in the hardness value of the unit cell will increase the wear degree of the brake drum on the brake pads. The grid-like specimen of the carbon-increasing unit cell causes the greatest wear on the brake pads, reaching 29.86 mg,which is a 119.5%increase.Before implementing the surface treatment, the wear amount of the brake drum specimens and the wear amount of the brake pads are roughly inversely proportional. The brake drum with C-type graphite causes the least wear on the brake pads, approximately 13 mg.After the surface treatment, the grid-like unit cell causes the greatest wear on the brake pads, reaching 27.2 mg,which is an increase of approximately 100%.When the carbon content of the base metal reaches 3.41%,the brake pads produce the least wear of approximately 22 mg,which is approximately 9%lower compared to the situation with the maximum wear. The brake drum with C-type graphite causes the greatest wear on the brake pads, reaching approximately 24.5 mg.
