Summary of the best evidence for the prevention and management of postoperative delirium in elderly patients with gastrointestinal malignancies

Abstract:Objective A systematic retrieval,extraction,and integration of evidence pertaining to postoperative de‐lirium prevention and management in elderly patients with gastrointestinal malignancies.Methods According to the"6S"evidence pyramid model,relevant literatures on the prevention and management of postoperative delirium in elderly patients with gastrointestinal malignancies were retrieved from domestic and foreign databases by computer,including clini‐cal decisions,best practices,guidelines and evidence summaries.The search was from the establishment of the database to April 30,2025.Then conducted the quality assessment of the included literature,followed by evidence extraction and synthesis.Results A total of 12 articles were included,including 4 guidelines,1 systematic review,1 quasi-experimen‐tal study,and 6 cohort studies.The evidence was summarized from four aspects:preoperative prediction and evaluation,preoperative intervention and preparation,intraoperative monitoring and management,and postoperative management.And 21 pieces of evidence were formed.Conclusion This integrates evidence on the prevention and management of post‐operative delirium in elderly patients with gastrointestinal malignancies,providing a basis for clinical healthcare profession‐als to prevent and manage postoperative delirium in patients.
