Prevalence and risk factors of obesity and abdominal obesity in 2 009 community-dwelling elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract：Objective To understand the prevalence and risk factors of obesity and abdominal obesity among com‐munity-dwelling elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),and to provide a basis for formulating targeted health management strategies.Methods A multi-stage cluster random sampling method was used to select 2 009 elderly patients with T2DM under the management of three community health service centers in Hongkou District,Shanghai as the research subjects.A questionnaire survey and physical examination were conducted for them from February 28 to April 30,2023.Logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of abdominal obesity in these patients.Results The prevalence of obesity among community-dwelling elderly patients with T2DM was 12.34%;the prevalence of abdominal obesity was 53.86%.Monthly per capita household income of<5 000 yuan(OR=1.262,95%CI:1.022-1.558),alcohol consumption(OR=2.349,95%CI:1.633-3.380),poor taste preferences(OR=2.011,95%CI:1.381-2.926),and sedentary behavior(OR=1.797,95%CI:1.419-2.276)were risk factors for abdominal obesity(all P<0.05).Conclusions Abdominal obesity is the main type of obesity among community-dwelling elderly patients with T2DM.The risk factors include monthly per capita household income,alcohol consumption,poor taste preferences,and sedentary be‐havior.
