Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between various eating behaviors and health-related quality of life among rural elderly using latent profile analysis(LPA).Methods An online questionnaire survey on general condi-tions,eating behaviors, and health-related quality of life of elderly was conducted in rural areas of Dongying,Shandong Province, through a convenience sampling method.LPA was used to categorize the eating behaviors of the elderly, while multiple logistic regression and Tobit regression models were used to explore the relationship between different categories and socio-demographic characteristics and health-related quality of life. Results The eating behaviors of the elderly in rural areas could be classified into three potential categories, which were named as the healthy eating behavior group(31.2%),the high-risk eating behavior group(43.5%),and the low-risk eating behavior group(25.3%).Logistic re-gression analyses showed that, relative to the healthy eating behavior group, the economic source, the frequency of going out,the presence or absence of alcohol, and the chronic disease were the influencing factors of the factors in the high-risk eating behavior group(all P<0.05),and monthly income, frequency of going out and chronic diseases were factors in the low-risk eating behavior group(all P<0.05).Significant differences were found in health utility values(F=8.394,P<0.001)and self-assessed health status(F=30.438,P<0.001)among the different categories of elderly.Tobit regression analysis showed a negative correlation between eating behaviors and health utility value in the high-risk eating behavior group compared to the healthy eating behavior group(β=-0.145,P<0.001).Conclusions There is heterogeneity in the eating behaviors of the elderly, and poor eating behaviors have a significant negative impact on the health-related quali-ty of life of elderly. Therefore, interventions should be targeted according to the characteristics of different profile groups to improve eating behaviors and health-related quality of life in the elderly.
