Abstract:This study aimed to identify the pathogen causing mortality in breeding pigeons at a meat pigeon farm in Guangxi and provide insights for controlling Salmonella infections in local pigeon populations.A bacterial isolate was purified from the livers of deceased breeding pigeons. The isolate was identified through conventional bacteriological methods and 16S rRNA gene sequencing.Antibiotic resistance was analyzed via antimicrobial susceptibility testing and antibiotic resistance gene detection, while pathogenicity was assessed through animal challenge experiments and virulence gene screening. Results demonstrated that a strain of Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from the liver samples. The isolate exhibited resistance to tetracyclines but susceptibility to β-lactams,sulfonamides,aminoglycosides,chloramphenicols,and quinolones, while carrying three resistance genes(TEM,sul2,and tetA).The isolate caused lethal infections in mice and harbored 10 virulence genes(invA,ssel, mogA,mgtC,sopB,spvB,spvC,spvR,stn, and fimA).The findings confirm that the isolated Salmonella Typhimurium is the causative agent of mortality in breeding pigeons.Although susceptible to multiple antimicrobials, its high pathogenicity poses a significant threat to the meat pigeon industry.
