Abstract:Two rhesus monkeys exhibited intermittent watery diarrhea and loose stools lasted for over half a month.Direct fecal smear microscopy examination was used repeatedly, ultimately revealed abundant trophozoites and cysts, and confirmed chronic diarrhea caused by Balantidium coli infection. The monkeys were subsequently treated with metronidazole or azithromycin, metronidazole+berberine, and metronidazole+berberine+compound sulfamethoxazole. All regimens effectively alleviated diarrhea symptoms, but only the combination of metronidazole+berberine+compound sulfamethoxazole completely eradicated intestinal trophozoites and cysts. This article reviews the treatment of two cases of chronic diarrhea caused by Balantidium coli in monkeys, aims to provide new insights into the management of refractory Balantidium coli infections in animals.
