Abstract:Objective:To investigate the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis in psoriatic patients with or without psoriatic arthritis (PsA).Methods: 157 psoriatic patients and 100 age-gender-and body mass index (BMI)-matched subjects without psoriasis or known thyroid disease or autoimmune disease were studied.Triiodothyronine, thyroxine, thyroid stimulating hormone, antithyroglobulin and antithyroidperoxidase antibody levels were measured in all of the subjects.Psoriasis severity was assessed with Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI).Autoimmune thyroiditis was defined by the presence of positive autoantibodies to thyroid peroxidase and/or thyroglobulin. The incidence of autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid hormone levels were compared between two groups.Meanwhile, the risk factor was also evaluated. Results: There was no difference in the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis between psoriatic patients and controls (11.5% vs 9%, X2=0.40,P>0.05).Autoimmune thyroiditis in psoriatic patients was not related with age of psoriasis onset, psoriasis duration, PASI score and obesity.Serum TT3, FT3 and TSH level in psoriasis was significantly higher than control group, the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: Psoriatic patients with or without PsA do not have an increased risk for autoimmune thyroiditis.Triiodothyronine may be involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
