Awareness Levels of the Public to Syphilis Knowledge:Survey Results of a Population -based Investigation in Guangzhou

Abstract：Objective:To evaluate effect of health education on syphilis knowledge for the pub-lic after performing national syphilis control strategy in Guangzhou .Methods:After specific sur-veying on public awareness to syphilis preventive knowledge for Guangzhou resident in 2012 in both experimental districts of Lingnan Street and control district of Huangshi Street with unified na -tional standard questionnaire , a cross-section investigation by stratified cluster sampling was con-ducted to address the public awareness in Guangzhou to preventive knowledge of syphilis in year 2013 with the same questionnaire in which eight questions were included .Individuals who respon-ded six in eight items correctly which were associated with syphilis concerned were considered as good awareness .Awareness proportion and accurate rate for each items corresponding to different groups of population was calculated by SPSS 17 .0 version .Results:5824 individuals were investi-gated, including 523 residents in 5824 individuals were investigated in year 2012 by specific sur-vey.In general, the proportion of the public awareness to syphilis knowledge was 83.9%,and 26 point higher when comparable to that of year 2011 and exhibited a higher levels than different groups of population as well .The proportion of the public to syphilis knowledge in experimental community was 80.9%and 74.3%of that in community of control and exhibited statistics differ-ence(χ2=6.54,OR=1.46,95%CI 1.09~1.97).The respondent accurate rate to each syphi-lis knowledge point for different population showed significant difference also .FSWs had higher awareness level among the eight different population studied .Younger age , and lower education levels and less access ways to syphilis knowledge were associated with lower public awareness . People from different district and males were all contributed to levels of awareness .Conclusion:Public awareness to syphilis improved gradually in Guangzhou .Combining with staff's outreach , health education platform basing on the community health service center may play an important role in improving the public awareness to syphilis , which is worth recommending in the program of sexually transmitted disease and AIDS control .
