Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of preoperative peripheral blood neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on the prognosis of patients with thyroid carcinoma. Methods The clinical data of 83 patients with thyroid cancer treated with operation from January 2007 to December 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. The relationship between the preoperative peripheral blood NLR level and clinicopathological characteristics and its prognosis was analyzed. Results The receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curve showed that the best cutoff value of preoperative NLR was 2.072.Eighty-three patients were divided into low NLR group (NLR<2.072,n =53) and high NLR group (NLR ≥ 2.072,n =30).Preoperative NLR level of thyroid cancer patients was correlated with lymph node metastasis,T stage and clinical stage (P<0.05).The 5-year survival rates of patients with high NLR level and low NLR level were 50.0% and 79.2%,respectively,and the difference was statistically significant (P =0.002).Conclusion Preoperative NLR level was correlated with lymph node metastasis,T stage and clinical stage, and the prognosis of patients with high preoperative NLR level was poor.
