Abstract:Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome(IBS-D)is a common functional gastrointestinal disease characterized primarily by abdominal pain or discomfort, altered bowel habits and abnormal stool consistency. In conventional Western medicine, commonly used drugs include antibiotics, adsorbent antidiarrheals, adsorptive antidiarrheal drugs and 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor antagonists, but the therapeutic effect is often limited and the disease is prone to recurrence.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)regulates IBS-D through a variety of therapeutic approaches, showing favorable efficacy and fewer adverse reactions. This paper reviews the recent research progress on IBS-D from the aspects of TCM syndrome differentiation and Chinese herbal medicine treatment.
