Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical effect of biofeedback therapy combined with retention enema with Huanggui enema in the treatment of the elderly experiencing functional constipation with qi stagnation syndrome. Methods Sixty elderly patients experiencing functional constipation with qi stagnation syndrome who were admitted from February 2024 to October 2024 were selected and divided into the observation group(n=30)and the control group,(n=30),using a random number table method. The observation group was treated with biofeedback therapy combined with retention enema with Huanggui enema, while the control group was treated with biofeedback therapy. Both groups were treated for 4 weeks.Clinical effect after treatment, anorectal manometry values before and after treatment[20-second anal canal resting pressure(ARP),20-second maximum anal canal systolic pressure(MSP),maximum tolerated volume(MTV),defecatory sensation threshold(DSV)],pelvic floor electromyography indicators, constipation symptom score, quality of life[Patient Assessment of Constipation-Quality of Life Scale(PAC-QOL)]score and the recurrence of constipation and the occurrence of adverse reactions at 1 and 3 months after treatment were compared between the two groups. Results There was no significant difference in the clinical effect between the two groups after treatment(P>0.05).At 4 weeks after treatment,ARP,MTV and DSV in both groups decreased, while MSP increased. Moreover,ARP,MTV and DSV in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, while MSP was higher than that in the control group(P<0.05,P<0.01).At 4 weeks after treatment, the levels of type Ⅰfiber, type Ⅱ fiber and endurance test in both groups increased, which were higher in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05,P<0.01).At 4 weeks after treatment, the scores of fecal consistency, incomplete defecation, defecation difficulty, defecation interval, degree of abdominal distension and defecation frequency in both groups decreased, which were lower in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05,P<0.01).At 4 weeks after treatment, the scores of each dimension and the total score of the PAC-QOL scale in both groups decreased, and the scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group(P<0.05,P<0.01).At 1 and 3 months after treatment, the recurrence rate of constipation in the observation group was lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).No serious adverse reactions occurred in either group during the treatment period. Conclusion The combination of biofeedback therapy and retention enema with Huanggui enema can improve the anorectal motility and pelvic floor muscle strength of elderly patients experiencing functional constipation with qi stagnation syndrome, thereby alleviating constipation symptoms, improving the quality of life, and is conducive to reducing the recurrence rate of constipation.
