Abstract:Objective To observe the correlation of the serum levels of Apelin to blood glucose, lipids and insulin resistance in obese patients. Methods 64 obese patients who were treated in our hospital from October 2016 to October 2017 were selected as the observation group, and 64 healthy people who underwent physical examination during the same period were enrolled as the control group. The serum Apelin levels were measured. In the meantime, those in the observation group underwent ora glucose tolerance test, and fasting blood glucose, 2 h postprandial blood glucose (2 h PG), triglyceride and fasting insulin were measured. Homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was calculated. The correlation between serum Apelin levels and blood glucose, lipids and insulin resistance in obese patients were analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis. Results The serum levels of Apelin in the observation group and the control group were (446.54±45.32) ng/L and (378.42±38.25) ng/L respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (t=9.189, P<0.001). The observation group included 28 cases of normal glucose tolerance (NGT), 24 cases of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and 12 cases of type 2 diabetes (T2 DM). The serum Apelin levels of the IGT and T2 DM groups were higher than those of the NGT group, suggesting significant differences (P<0.05). The serum Apelin levels of the T2 DM group were significantly higher than those of the IGT group (P<0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that the serum Apelin levels in obese patients were positively correlated with 2 hPG, triglycerides and the HOMA-IR (r=0.842, P<0.001; r=0.938, P=0.000; r=0.916, P<0.001). Conclusion The serum levels of Apelin in obese patients are positively correlated with blood glucose, lipids and insulin resistance, which indicates that Apelin plays a certain role in the occurrence and development of obesity.
