Abstract:Objective To explore the efficacy of reduced glutathione as an adjuvant drug in initial treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis(PTB)at intensive phase and its effect on levels of serum glatathione peroxidase(GPX),xanthine oxidase(XOD),malondialdehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione S-transferase(GST). Methods A total of 90 PTB patients who received initial treatment in the Third People's Hospital of Hengshui from December 2015 to June 2016 were selected and divided into observation group(n=45)and control group(n=45). Control group was giv-en routine anti-tuberculosis treatment (isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide and ethambutoli),whereas observation group was treated with routine anti-tuberculosis treatment combined with reduced glutathione during intensive phase treatment. The changes of levels of serum GPX,XOD,MDA,SOD and GST before treatment and at different time points(2,4 and 8 weeks)after treatment,as well as drug-induced liver injury and therapeutic response rate were observed in both groups. Results After 2 weeks of treatment, the level of GST was higher in observation group than in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). At 4 and 6 weeks after treatment, the levels of XOD and MDA in the observation group were significantly lower than those before treatment, whereas the levels of GPX,SOD and GST were re-markably higher than those before treatment, suggesting significant differences(P<0.05). By contrast, the level of XOD and MDA in the observation group was significantly lower, and the levels of GPX,SOD and GST were higher than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). At 1 and 2 months after treatment,therapeu-tic response rate was higher in the observation group than in the control group, and significant difference was found(P<0.05). The incidence of drug-induced liver injury was lower in the observation group than in the control group at 2,4 and 8 weeks after treatment, indicating significant differences(P<0.05). Conclusion On the basis of conventional anti-tuberculosis treatment, reduced glutathione as an adjuvant drug can improve the therapeutic effect of patients for the initial treatment of PTB at intensive phase by increasing the antioxidant capacity.
