A Study on the Constitution of the Population Susceptible to Cold in Lingnan Area by TCM

Abstract:Objective To analyze the constitution of the population susceptible to cold in Lingnan area based on TCM,and to provide theoretical basis for the preventive treatment of disease. Methods Questionnaire survey was conducted to analyze the basic information on subjects susceptible to common cold who were eligible for inclusion and exclusion.The con-stitution by TCM was identified and the results were analyzed. Results A total of 126 questionnaires were sent out,and 118 valid ones were retrived,with an effective response rate of 93.7%. Of 118 cases,there were 113 (95.8%) with mixed con-stitution,and 5 (4.2%) with a single constitution.The main body constitution was Yang deficiency,accounting for 68.6%. Of 113 cases of mixed constitution,most had qi deficiency,phlegm and dampness,and blood stasis.For those with Yang defi-ciency,mixed constitution is manifested as Qi deficiency,phlegm dampness and blood stasis.As for those with Qi deficiency, mixed constitution is characterized mainly by Yang deficiency,phlegm dampness and Qi stagnation. With respect to those with static-blood consititution,mixed constitution is characterized by Yang deficiency,and damp-heat constitution. Conclusion The main body constitution of people susceptible to cold in Lingnan area are Yang deficiency,and the mixed constitution is characterized by Qi deficiency.It is suggested that the population susceptible to cold in Lingnan area should adopt correspond-ing intervention measures for Yang deficiency and Qi deficiency in preventive treatment of disease by TCM.
