Abstract:Objective To investigate the ultrasonographic features of visceral artery aneurysms and the diagnostic value of color Doppler ultrasound. Methods Twenty-two cases of visceral aneurysms diagnosed by spiral computed tomography angiography (CTA) or digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in our hospital were enrolled. All patients underwent abdominal ultrasonography to analyze the characteristics of the sonography and the causes of misdiagnosis. Results All patients in this group were misdiagnosed initially as liver tumor rupture (n =9),abdominal aortic dissection (n =6),acute appendicitis (n =3),peptic ulcer (n =2),gastrointestinal bleeding (n =1) and gallstone (n =1).Twelve patients were diagnosed initially as having visceral aneurysm using ultrasound, and 10 were misdiagnosed (a misdiagnosis rate of 45.5%),including pseudoaneurysm (n =3),dissection aneurysm (n =3),mesenteric cyst (n =1),spleen cyst (n =1),and lymphatic cyst (n =1).All patients were reexamined using ultrasound,to confirm splenic artery aneurysm (n =9),celiac artery aneurysm (n =8),superior mesenteric artery aneurysm (n =4),and right renal artery aneurysm (n =1).Conclusion Ultrasound can be used as a screening method for visceral aneurysm. Thus, careful observation of the lesion blood flow signal may assist to avoid or reduce misdiagnosis.
