Clinical Characteristics and Misdiagnosis Analysis of Breast Phyllodes Tumors

Abstract:Objective To investigate key points of diagnosis and misdiagnosed causes of breast phyllodes tumors (PTs).Methods Clinical data of 31 patients with PTs admitted during January 2013 and July 2016 was retrospectively analyzed.Results All patients were female with the age from 13 to 73 years old and 7d-16 years of course of disease, and all patients saw doctors for breast lumps.Preoperative misdiagnosis was found in 26 patients.There were 13 patients misdiagnosed as having breast cancer, 12 patients misdiagnosed as having benign lesions and 1 patient misdiagnosed as having lymphadenovarix, and the misdiagnosed rate was 83.9%.All the 31 patients were confirmed as having PTs by pathological results after operation, in which there were 17 patients with benign diseases, 9 patients with borderline and 5 patients with malignant diseases.All patients underwent surgeries, and no local recurrence or metastasis was found in 2-44 months of follow-up excepted 1 patient was lost follow-up.Conclusion PTs is rare in clinic, and it is easy to be misdiagnosed before operation.The preoperative core needle biopsy is helpful in diagnosing PTs.
