Retrospective Analyses of 105 Malpractices in Ophthalmologic Department from 2003 to 2014

Abstract:Objective To analyze related characters and causes of malpractices in ophthalmologic department from fo-rensic viewpoint in order to improve medical security. Methods A total of 105 malpractices in ophthalmologic department during February 2003 and July 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. Results There were 2187 malpractices during the same period, in which 105 malpractices (4. 8%) were in ophthalmologic department, and 106 patients were involved. The age group was mainly middle aged and elderly male patients. Tertiary hospitals (76. 19%) were more common involved one in malpractices. The top three lesions induced malpractices in ophthalmologic department were general disease of ocular mani-fest, crystalline lens diseases and ocular injury. The complaints between plaintiff and defendant were focused on surgical pro-cedures, informed consent and so on. Conclusion The complexity of ophthalmic diseases, variety of treatments and improve-ment of people's legal awareness contribute are the main causes of increasing ophthalmic malpractices, so medical staff in oph-thalmologic department should intensify their self-protection awareness, enhance medical safety and well communicate with pa-tients in informed consent in order to reduce incidence rate of medical dispute.
