Abstract:Objective To assess the effects of cigarette smoking on heart rate, electrocardiogram and blood pressure in the new recruits during exercise stress test. Methods 52 smokers and 48 nonsmokers were tested with the standard Bruce treadmill protocol from Step Ⅲ. The heart rate and blood pressure were measured at motionless rest, every 3 minutes during the exercise stress test and every 3 minutes during recovery using standard laboratory procedures. Results Compared with the controls, the smokers had an obvious increase in heart rate during exercise stress test (P < 0. 01); a longer time of heart rate returning to normal (P < 0. 05); a smaller increase in systolic blood pressure during exercise stress test (P < 0. 05); a longer time of systolic blood pressure returning to normal (P < 0. 05); an obvious decrease in diastolic blood pressure during exercise stress test (P < 0. 01). Conclusion Cigarette smoking may cause a much bigger increase of systolic blood pressure and heart rate in the new recruits during exercise stress test. It is believed that smoking is accompanied by disturbance of cardiovascular autonomic control.
