Abstract:Esophageal cancer is a prevalent malignancy worldwide, particularly in regions such as China, where its high incidence poses a significant threat to public health.Although imaging techniques are the primary diagnostic tools for esophageal cancer, their effectiveness in early detection is limited. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms of esophageal cancer and identifying novel biomarkers are essen-tial for improving early diagnosis and enabling targeted therapies. In recent years, glycomics has emerged as a rapidly advancing field, with the glycan code playing an increasingly crucial role in tumorigenesis,pro-gression,and metastasis.Aberrant glycosylation has been demonstrated to exert a profound impact on a number of fundamental cancer processes, including tumorigenesis and progression. The glycomics altera-tions in esophageal cancer may offer valuable insights into the the mechanisms of tumor development and aid in the discovery of new biomarkers. This review highlights recent advancements in glycomics related to the early diagnosis and progression of esophageal cancer, focusing on the aberrant expression of glycans, glycoproteins, glycosyltransferases and glycosidases. The potential of glycomics in the discovery of bio-markers and targeted therapies for esophageal cancer is also discussed, aiming to provide valuable insights for future research in the field.
