Abstract:Transcranial Electrical Stimulation(tES)is a non-invasive neural regulation technique that reg-ulates nerves by applying weak electrical currents to the scalp. At present,tES has been widely used in sleep regulation, including improving the sleep quality of patients in clinical practice and studying the sleep status of healthy subjects. This article first summarizes the EEG characteristics in sleep staging,intro-duces different waveforms and their importance in sleep.Subsequently, the relevant research on tES in im-proving sleep was reviewed, classified into two situations:before bedtime and during sleep. The results showed that applying mid low frequency alternating current stimulation before bedtime can more effective-ly induce sleep;Applying low-frequency alternating current stimulation during sleep has a significant effect on maintaining deep sleep. At the same time, the effects of direct current and high-frequency alternating current stimulation on suppressing drowsiness were also evaluated, indicating that different stimulation schemes have different effects on the final stimulation. Finally, the stimulation mechanism of tES on the generated results and the development trend of closed-loop tES with real-time EEG signal feedback were discussed.
