Abstract:Elemental red phosphorus,as a novel non-metallic semiconductor material, has garnered signifi-cant attention in the fields of energy conversion and environmental remediation. In this study, commercial red phosphorus was modified through hydrothermal treatment, and the modified elemental red phosphorus with varying hydrothermal treatment durations was employed for the effective adsorption and reduction of Cr(Ⅵ).Comprehensive analysis using advanced characterization techniques was conducted to investigate the performance, relevant characteristics, and critical parameters governing the adsorption and reduction processes of Cr(Ⅵ)by red phosphorus. The study specifically delved into the impacts of optimal hydro-thermal treatment durations,pH values, adsorption concentrations, and presence of coexisting ions on the removal efficiency of Cr(Ⅵ)by red phosphorus.By integrating kinetic investigations, the underlying ad-sorption and reduction mechanisms employed by red phosphorus against Cr(Ⅵ)were elucidated. The ex-perimental findings demonstrated that the hydrothermal treatment enhanced the active sites on elemental red phosphorus by augmenting its specific surface area, consequently boosting the material's adsorption capacity towards Cr(Ⅵ).Notably, the optimized sample RP-24 exhibited remarkable effectiveness in ad-sorbing Cr(Ⅵ),displaying a saturated adsorption capacity of 42 mg/g.Furthermore,the adsorption process adhered to quasi-second-order kinetics and conformed to the Langmuir isothermal model.Follow-ing adsorption, the modified elemental red phosphorus efficiently facilitated the complete reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)through the photocatalytic pathway.
