Abstract:Objective To investigate the risk factors associated with the recurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Methods One hundred and seventy-five elderly patients (age≥60) who had been diagnosed and treated at the Air Force General Hospital were given a telephone follow-up at least 12 months after their manual repositioning treatment and were divided into two groups according to the recurrence of vertigo. At the same time, another 73 young and middle-aged patients (age<60) who had been diagnosed and treated at the Air Force General Hospital were given a telephone follow-up at least 12 months after their manual repositioning treatment and were randomly divided into two groups as well. The gender, age, semicircular canal attacked, times of repositioning treatment, underlying diseases and disease-inducing factors were compared using binary logistic regression analysis. Results Binary logistic regression analysis showed that statistically significant difference in the incidence of hyperlipidemia and diabetes was found between the recurrent group and the non-recurrent group of the elderly patients (P<0.05). However, the rate of overwork and migraine was found to be significantly different between the recurrent group and the non-recurrent group of young and middle-aged patients (P<0.05). Conclusion Risk factors for recurrence of BPPV vary with ways of life and age. To help BPPV patients to prevent the recurrence more effectively, doctors should give different advice to patients of different age.
