Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs) in oral squamous cell carcinoma and their biological behavior. Methods The expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in oral and normal oral tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. The association between high expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and clinical cervical lymph node metastasis was analyzed. The effect of MMP-2 and MMP-9 expressions on the migration of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells was examined by scratch test. The effect of MMP-2 and MMP-9 expressions on the invasive ability of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells was detected by Transwell assay. Results Compared with normal oral tissue, the expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in oral squamous cell carcinoma were significantly up-regulated. The high expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were positively correlated with cervical lymph node metastasis in clinical patients. Inhibition of MMP 2 and MMP-9 expressions can inhibit the migration and invasion of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells. Conclusions The expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in oral cancer are significantly increased. Inhibition of MMP-2 and MMP-9 expressions can regulate the biological behavior of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
