Abstract:Objective To enhance the awareness of external auditory canal cholesteatoma and improve aeromedical assessment level through disease analysis and review of related literature. Methods The clinical data of civil cadet candidates with external auditory canal cholesteatoma as well as related literature were retrospectively reviewed. The clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of external auditory canal cholesteatoma and aeromedical assessment were summarized. Results The civil cadet candidates with external auditory canal cholesteatoma received surgical treatment in 2012. After surgery, the external auditory canal was enlarged. Defects of the bone were found in the upper and posterior walls of the external auditory canal. The average hearing loss of language frequency was 41.25 dB and the thresholds at 250, 500 and 1 000 Hz frequencies exceeded the standard, respectively. Conclusion The diagnosis of external auditory canal cholesteatoma is not complicated. Diagnosis and assessment should be based on comprehensive assessment, involving medical history, clinical examinations, hearing loss and complications.
