Abstract:Objective To evaluate the applicability of emergency endoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of acute non-variceal upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage (ANVUGIB) among high risk patients identified using the Rockall score. Methods The clinical data of 90 patients with ANVUGIB treated in our hospital between March 2014 and January 2017 was analyzed retrospectively. According to the different times for endoscopy, these patients were equally divided into emergency endoscopy group (endoscopic examination 1-2 d after hemorrhage) and non-emergency endoscopy group (endoscopic examination 2 days after hemorrhage). The length of hospital stay, medical expenses, amounts of blood transfusion, mortality and other items were compared and analyzed between the two groups of patients. Results The length of hospital stay, medical expenses, amounts of blood transfusion and mortality were significantly shorter or lower in emergency endoscopy group than in non-emergency endoscopy group (P<0.05).Conclusion sEmergency endoscopy in patients with high risk ANVUGIB identified with the Rockall score cannot significantly reduce the mortality of patients, but can save medical resources, improve medical procedures, and is worthy of promotion. However, the advantages of this approach need to be further explored clinically.
