Abstract:Objective To study the effect of non-nutritive sucking and oral glucose solution on relieving pain reaction during neonatal heel prick. Methods A convenience sample method was used to assign 110 infants (gesta-tional age 27 to 37 weeks) to three groups: the non-nutritive sucking group (NNS group), the oral 25% dextrose solu-tion group (GS group) and the control group. One minute and two minutes into the preparation period of intervention, one minute and two minutes into the puncture process, and one minute and two minutes into the recovery period, pain reaction, heart rate, respiration and the number of times of crying were compared between the three groups. Results Completed data was collected from a total of 120 cases of neonates, with 40 cases from each group. With regard to pain reaction, heart rate and the number of times of crying, there was statistically significant difference between NNS group and GS group (P<0.05). Conclusion Both non-nutritive sucking and oral intake of dextrose can relieve the pain of newborn babies, but the former is more effective.
