Clinical analysis of complications following implantation of permanent cardiac pacemaker

Abstract：Objective To explore the postoperative complications after permanent cardiac pacemaker implantation among patients of different ages.Methods One hundred and nine patients who had received permanent cardiac pacemaker implantation in our hospital between July 2013 and September 2015 were selected as subjects, who were divided into the study group (n=52, sixty years old or above) and the control group (n=57, under sixty years old). Complications, pacemaker indications and parameters of pacemakers were observed and compared between the two groups.Results The incidence of ventricular fibrillation, electrode displacement and myocardial perforation in the study group was higher than in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the incidence of pocket hematoma, pocket rupture, delayed wound healing, pneumothorax or hemopneumothorax (P>0.05). There was statistically significant difference between the two groups in ventricular fibrillation with long intervals or the rate of double bundle branch block (P<0.05). The difference in the incidence of the second-degree intraventricular block, third-degree intraventricular block and sick sinus syndrome was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The ventricular and atrial pacing thresholds in the study group were significantly higher than in the control group (P<0.05).Conclusion Close observation and proper evaluation of postoperative complications after permanent cardiac pacemaker implantation can play a positive role in the prevention and treatment of complications. For patients above 60, it is necessary to prevent the occurrence of ventricular fibrillation、electrode dislocation and myocardial perforation.
