An empirical study on medical selection of flying cadets with congenital heart diseases between PLAAF and USAF

Abstract:ObjectiveTo determine whether the candidates who were disqualified for having congenital heart diseases in People' s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) medical selection of flying cadets were qualified or not according to United States Air Force (USAF) Medical Standards Directory, and to make suggestions on revising PLAAF medical selection standards of flying cadets.MethodsEcocardiography was conducted on candidates participating in the final stage of medical selection of flying cadets who had cardiac murmurs by aulscultation from 2012 to 2015, and they were determined whether they were qualified or not according to both PLAAF medical selection standards and USAF Medical Standards Directory respectively.ResultsThere were no significant differences of disqualification rate concerning congenital heart disease from 2012 to 2015 (P>0.05); 86.67% candidates disqualified for having congenital heart disease in PLAAF medical selection were qualified when assessed by USAF Medical Standards Directory.ConclusionThere were some differences of medical selection standards of flying cadets concerning congenital heart diseases between PLAAF and USAF, and we could revise PLAAF standards by using USAF standards for reference.
