Abstract:Objective To verify the percentage of hypochromic red cells(%HYPO)as the early predictor of iron deficiency(ID)in women with menometrorrhagia. Methods A total of 142 female outpatients with menometrorrhagia (bleeding>7 d in length, with an average blood loss>80 ml)were selected. These subjects were divided into 2 groups:the ID group(103 cases), the control group(39 cases). Inclusion criteria: ID was defined as ferritin<14μg/L, and healthy controls were defined as ferritin≥14μg/L, and hemoglobin≥110 g/L. We measured the values of %HYPO, red blood cell count(RBC), hemoglobin(Hb), hematocrit(HCT), red blood cell distribution width(RDW), mean corpuscular volume(MCV), serum ferritin(SF), serum iron(SI), transferrin saturation(TS), and total iron binding capacity(TIBC). Receiver operating characteristics analysis was performed to assess %HYPO and other routine hematological parameters in identifying ID.Results %HYPO was 14.8(5.3, 38.0)in subjects with ID, and 0.5(0.3, 0.9)in healthy controls. Receiver operator characteristic(ROC)curve demonstrated that the area under the curve(AUC)for %HYPO(0.941)was significantly greater than that for RDW(0.892), Hb(0.892), MCV(0.851)and HCT(0.849)in the diagnosis of ID.Conclusion %HYPO was a better predictor than conventional routine hematological parameters in the diagnosis of ID.
