Analysis of a case of pulmonary sequestration presenting as hemoptysis

Abstract:ObjectiveTo increase awareness of pulmonary sequestration through analysis on cases with hemoptysis as main manifestation.MethodsThe clinical symptoms, laboratory tests, radiographic patterns of a patient with pulmonary sequestration presenting as hemoptysis were analyzed and the literatures were reviewed.ResultsA 51-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with of cough and hemoptysis. 3D reconstruction with enhanced spiral CT showed arterial supply to this lesion was from the thoracic aorta. Pulmonary sequestration was the diagnosis, and surgery was suggested to the patient. Because the patient refused surgical treatment, moxifloxacin and Yunnan Baiyao were given for anti- infection and hemostasis, and the patient was discharged till the hemoptysis stopped.ConclusionPulmonary sequestration is a rare disorder and easily overlooked in clinical practice. The diagnosis of pulmonary sequestration is dependent on 3D reconstruction with enhanced spiral CT. Surgery is the best treatment for this disease.
