Abstract:Objective We attempted to study the role of Th17 cells and interleukin 17 (IL-17) in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).MethodsA total of 60 SLE patients and 30 healthy subjects were recruited in this study. The frequency of Th17 cells was analyzed by flow cytometry and the serum IL-17 concentration was determined by ELISA. The correlation between SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) and the frequency of Th17 cells or the serum IL-17 concentration were analyzed.ResultsSLE patients had a higher frequency of Th17 cells in peripheral blood T cells compared with healthy subjects [(2.51±0.76)% in SLE patients vs (0.68±0.23)% in healthy subjects,P<0.01]. Moreover, the serum IL-17 concentration in SLE patients increased more significantly than that in healthy subjects [(114.2±17.1)pg/ml in SLE patients and(52.2±6.9)pg/ml in healthy subjects,P<0.01 respectively]. There was a strong positive association between SLEDAI and the frequency of Th17 cells or the serum IL-17 concentration in SLE patients.ConclusionTh17 cells and IL-17 may play a role in the pathogensis of SLE. Targeting Th17 cells or IL-17 may have a theropeutic potential in the treatment of SLE.
