Abstract: Objective We aimed to discuss the cause that patients with low back pain had to receive operation after manipulation. Methods Clinical data of 14 patients who received operation after manipulation was analyzed retrospectively and the patients were chosen from 203 low back pain patients with manipulation during June 2010 to November 2011. Results The cause of patients seeking operation after manipulation included lateral recess stenosis(71.4%), cauda equine injury (14.3%), degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (7.1%)and nerve root paralysis(7.1%). All patients after surgery had no leg pain, two patients restored to normal urination and defecation, and three patients were left leg numbness. Conclusion Understanding the cause of manipulation failure was helpful to grasp the indication and opportunity of manipulation for low back pain patients.
