Abstract:Objective To investigate whether hydrogen-rich water can improve sleep quality in patients with impaired fasting glucose and to further explore whether hydrogen-enriched water may be more effective in improving sleep disorders from the perspective of the type of water consumed. Methods The study subjects were from patients judged to have impaired fasting blood glucose in the Third Affrliated Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University.Eighty-nine patients with impaired fasting glucose were randomly divided into two groups(43 in the hydrogen-rich water group and 46 in the ordinary water group). Both groups were intervened by telephone for their drinking water. The hydrogen-rich water group drank hydrogen-rich water with a hydrogen mass concentration of 1.4 mg/L,and the ordinary water group drank pure water. The Pittsburgh sleep quality(PSQ)score was observed in the total population and in the hydrogen-enriched water and ordinary water groups before and after the intervention, and the correlation between the baseline characteristics and the absolute rate of change in the total PSQ score was assessed in each group. Results There was no statistically significant difference in the end-measurement PSQ scores between subjects in the plain water and hydrogen-enriched water groups. There was a downward trend in the end-measurement scores in both groups compared to the baseline PSQ scores(hydrogen-enriched water group:-0.01 points/day,P=0.046;regular water group:-0.02 points/day,P=0.023).Conclusion Both hydrogen-rich water and purified water can improve sleep quality in patients with impaired fasting glucose, but the effects are not significantly different.
