Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between serum estradiol (E2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels in postmenopausal women diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and carotid atherosclerosis (AS).Methods 75 postmenopausal women with T2DM and carotid AS in our hospital from January to December in 2015 were divided into 2 groups according to the level of E2,with E2>40 pg/mL group (35 cases) and E2≤40 pg/mL group (40 cases). In addition,20 cases with carotid AS and E2>40 pg/mL after menopause were in the control group.Serum MMP-9 and estradiol were determined. Results The level of MMP-9 in the E2>40pg/ml group was (605.33 + 239.26) μg/L,significantly higher than that in the control group (436.39 + 209.18) μg/L (P<0.05).The level of MMP-9 in the E2≤40 pg/mL group was (795.85 + 275.86) μg/L,significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05),the MMP-9 level of the E2≤40 pg/mL group was significantly higher than that of E2>40 pg/mL group (P<0.05).Conclusion MMP-9 and E2 level of postmenopausal women with T2DM and carotid AS had a negative correlation. After menopause, the serum MMP-9 in patients with T2DM and carotid AS increased significantly.
