Abstract:Objective To explore the protective effect of genistein on ammonia-induced astrocyte swelling preliminarily. Meth-ods Cell viability was examined through MTT assay and cell swelling was detected by calcein as a fluorescence probe. Results 50~200 μM genistein produced no effect on the viability of astrocyte, but inhibited ammonia-induced astrocyte swelling significantly. Thus its anti-edema activity is related to concentration. Conclusion Genistein can inhibit the swelling of astrocytes induced by ammonia and is expected to become a newly therapeutic agent for hepatic encephalopathy.
