Abstract:s:Objective To study the constituents of phenolic acids of Forsythia suspensa ( Thunb. ) Vahl. Methods The com-pounds were separated and purified by column chromatography such as macroreticular resin, silica gel column chromatography, Sepha-dex LH-20 and ODS; their structures were established by physicochemical properties and spectroscopic methods. Results Eight compounds were obtained from the 60% ethanol-water extracts of the Forsythia suspensa ( Thunb. ) Vahl. The structures were deter-mined as protocatechuic aldehyde (1), vanillic acid (2), 4- (hydroxymethyl) phenol (3), 4- (2-hydroxyethyl) benzaldehyde (4), 2- (4-methoxyphenyl) acetaldehyde (5), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (6), Forsythiaside A (7), Forsythiaside E (8). Con-clusion Compounds 3, 4 and 5 were isolated from the genus Forsythia for the first time.
