Abstract:Objective To explore the etiology and risk factors of young adult patients with ischemic stroke. Methods The retro-spective analysis was made of the clinical information of 94 cases of ischemic stroke in young adults. Etiology was determined by the Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment ( TOAST) criteria. And comparisons were made between 94 cases of young adult patients and 101 cases of elderly patients. All data were analyzed to explore the etiology and risk factors of young adult patients with Ischemic stroke. Results The classification using TOAST was as follows:large-artery atherosclerosis making up 43. 6%, small-artery occlu-sion constituting 20. 2%, stroke of undetermined etiology 17. 0%, stroke of other determined etiology 12. 8% and cardioembolism 6. 4%. Compared with the elderly patients, the subtypes of LAA and SOE were significantly different in two groups. The most frequent risk factors in young adult patients were hypertension (48. 9%), smoking (40. 4%) and dyslipidemia (35. 1%). The smoking rate of young patients in LAA subtype was markedly higher than that of elderly group. Conclusion LAA and SAO are the main etiology types of ischemic stroke in young adult patients, and smoking is more significant in LAA subtype.
