Abstract:[Objective]The contact model of unmodified involute herringbone gears is bilateral line-contact,which makes their loaded meshing characteristics highly sensitive to various asymmetrical errors introduced during manufacturing and instal-lation.Consequently,critical gears in practical applications require a certain degree of modification. In order to quickly evaluate the influence of different modification methods and amount on loaded meshing characteristics,a method of parametrically gener-ating the finite element model of the herringbone gear was proposed.[Methods]Based on the concept of Ease-off topology, the superposition of tooth surface modification was realized by altering the coordinates of finite element mesh nodes. On the basis, the influence of stagger angle error and axis non-parallelism error on the loading meshing performance of a pair of heavy-duty herringbone gears was simulated.[Results]The results show that under the influence of asymmetrical errors, such as stagger an-gle errors and axis non-parallelism errors, unmodified gears suffer from severe uneven load distribution on the tooth surface. In contrast, gears with crowning modifications exhibit a certain degree of redundancy against asymmetrical errors. However, the ex-isting methods for profile and helix modifications still require improvement in their ability to actively regulate the tooth surface modification amount and load meshing characteristics.
