Disease uncertainty and its influencing factors of family members of young patients with breast cancer

Abstract:Objective:To understand the status quo of disease uncertainty in family members of young patients with breast cancer and explore its influencing factors.Methods:The General Information Questionnaire,Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale-Family Member Form (MUIS-FM),State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) were used among 159 family members of breast cancer patients aged 18 to 45.Results:The family members' total score of disease uncertainty was (71.47±8.345) points.85.5% of the family members had a high level of disease uncertainty.Multiple regression analysis showed that disease uncertainty was related with status anxiety,social support,kind of chemotherapy side effects and degree of education.Conclusion: The disease uncertainty of family members of young breast cancer patients was at a high level and was affected by many factors.Health care workers may provide timely information about the disease in order to reduce the disease uncertainty of family members of patients,reduce their psychological stress and improve the quality of care.
