Investigation of emergency nurses’empathy ability and occupational burnout

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the emergency nurses’empathy ability and occupational burnout status and their relationships to provide the evidence for that we can improve emergency nurses empathy ability and reduce its occupational burnout.Methods:140 emergency nurses were investigated with questionnaires of Interpersonal Reactivity Index C (IRI C)and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)by convenience sampling in four hospitals of Beijing.Results:The empathy ability of emergency nurses was in a moderate level with total score of(54.20± 9.80)points including (14.5 1±2.90)points in empathy concern(15.01 ±3.69)points in fantasy,(13.05 ±3.30) points in perspective taking and(1 1.63 ±4.10)points in personal distress.The score of empathy concern was low,and sympathetic,imagination,perspective taking three dimensions belong to a moderate level;In the occu-pational burnout,the emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment belong to high burnout level,while the depersonalization belong to a moderate level;In the empathy ability,the perspective taking,sympathetic and e-motional exhaustion,and depersonalization and personal accomplishment were negatively correlated (P <0.05). Conclusion:The empathy ability of emergency nurses was related to occupational burnout.The empathy ability needs to be improved;improve emergency nurses empathy ability can reduce the occupational burnout level.
