Treatment of Multiple Refractory Alopecia Areata with Baricitinib: A Case Report
Abstract:Alopecia areata (AA) is a T cell-mediated inflammatory autoimmune self-limiting non-scarring hair loss. The pathogenesis is not yet fully understood and may be related to factors such as genetics, immunity, environment, oxidative stress, and microorganisms. It is currently believed that the immune system attacks the hair follicles, abnormal immune genes, and imbalanced immune factors lead to hair loss [1]. Clinically, alopecia areata is divided into different severity levels, including patchy alopecia, total alopecia, and universal alopecia. Traditional treatments include local therapy (topical glucocorticoids, minoxidil, etc.), systemic therapy (glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants), phototherapy (narrowband UVB, 308 excimer laser, etc.), traditional Chinese medicine (acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine), and psychological therapy [2]. Due to the complex etiology, easy recurrence, and difficulty in cure of this disease, JAK (Janus Kinase) inhibitors have become a new focus in the treatment of alopecia areata in recent years [3]. This study reports a case of multiple refractory alopecia areata treated with baricitinib.
