Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of intermittent respiratory muscle training combined with feeding training on lingual muscle strength and quality of life in stroke patients with dysphagia. Methods This retrospective study included 136 patients with stroke and dysphagia treated at our hospital between January 2019 and January 2023.Patients were divided into two groups based on different therapeutic approaches:the control group(n=76)receiving only feeding training, and the observation group(n=60)undergoing both intermittent respiratory muscle training and feeding training. The two sets had been evaluated on previous data, chewing activity, evacuation danger tongue power, tongue function, and the grade of mind. Results There was no significant difference in baseline characteristics between the two groups. After intervention, global unified swallowing scale(GUSS)scores increased from(14.95±4.32)to(17.24±5.39)in the observation group(t=2.75 1,P=0.007),and feeding oral intake scale(FOIS scores increased from(4.92±0.34)to(5.20±0.56)(t=3.601,P<0.001),while Mann assessment of swallowing ability(MPAS)scores decreased from(1.92±0.35)to(1.47±0.26)(t=8.310,P<0.001),all compared to the control group. After intervention, the standard swallowing function assessment Scale standardized swallowing assessment(SSA)was increased in all patients, and the scores of tongue flexibility, tongue coordination and tongue muscle strength in the observation group were higher than those in the control group(t=6.354,P<0.05).Post action, the observing cohort gained in taking and chewing outcomes relative to the baseline unit(t=4.078,P<0.05).Conclusion Combining intermittent respiratory muscle training with feeding training in stroke patients with swallowing disorders has positive outcomes. It can enhance patients'swallowing function, prevent aspiration, increase tongue muscle strength, and improve the quality of life for these patients. It is willing to be widely applied in catholic surgery.
